The Doctor Gives The Finger To The Government On His Way Out Of Triple J

Today marks the second last day for Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall on the job at the national youth broadcaster Triple J, with the now-tenured radio presenter set to hang up the microphone after ten years following his final Drive broadcast tomorrow afternoon. And, whilst he’d prefer to bow out quietly (somewhat unusual for such a brash fellow), there is one thing he’d quite like to do before his time at the J’s is up.

Throw a stern and solid middle finger to the Abbott Government over their budget cuts to the ABC.
The Government unceremoniously ripped $250-odd million out of the budget for the ABC and though Triple J is expected to emerge unscathed from the “efficiency review,” The Good Doctor still thinks the Government has acted like bullies in their handling of the whole situation.

But when the school bully knocks over the sandcastle he’s gonna bury some of your favourite matchbox cars. All you can do is clean them up as best you can. And stick your finger up at him when he’s not looking.”

Some of my good friends lost their jobs which sucks a lot.

The 36 year-old McDougall is “fucking off” to get married, churn out some new punk bangers with his band Frenzal Rhomb (about damned time), and generally avoid winding up being 50 years old and still working at a youth radio station. But as for how he wants to sign off after a decade at the mic?

I’ve been trying to work out what to say. I guess you do all your thank you’s, but I want to have a whole bunch of people talking and I just stop being there, disappear and hand over to Tom Tilley or Veronica and Lewis. Triple J keeps on rolling and the next time you hear from me I’ll be the guy calling in to be interviewed.”

The Doctor’s Great, Big, Fucking Off Party is on the air all Thursday afternoon with special guests Andy Bull, Art vs Science, former breakfast co-host and perennial Frenzal Rhomb bandmate Jay Whalley, and a swathe of unannounced guests.
His last stint at the helm of Drive runs from 3pm till 5:30pm Friday afternoon.
