The really very good first season of ‘Cleverman‘ was easily one of the most ambitious TV projects to come out of Australia in quite some time – possibly ever.
The 6-episode first series was a critical hit both locally and overseas, and it performed strongly in the ratings for the ABC here in Australia, as well as on US cable network SundanceTV.
The series copped an almost-unprecedented second season renewal on the day the show’s very first episode went to air here in Australia, and now we’ve got ourselves a first peek at what’s in store.
Set six months after the conclusion of season one, the new season continues the story of Koen West, the Cleverman, and his brother Waaru as they lead the superhuman Hairypeople in their struggle against the oppressive Containment Authority.
The new trailer is dripping with stylistic and narrative homages to other recent properties like ‘Stranger Things‘ (peep that dope-sounding synth-based soundtrack!), ‘The Hunger Games,’ and more than a little dash of ‘X-Men‘ thrown in for good measure.
The series is set to return to the ABC at 9pm on Thursday, June 29th.
