The brainchild of three legends with overactive imaginations – Elan Lee, a tech guy who used to work for Microsoft, cartoonist Matthew Inman and designer Shane Small – Exploding Kittens blew up Kickstarter when it went live on the crowd funding site back in January, mostly because it sounded cool AF.
Here’s the original explanation of what-the-shit ‘Exploding Kittens’ is:
“Exploding Kittens is a highly strategic kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette. Players take turns drawing cards until someone draws an exploding kitten and loses the game. The deck is made up of cards that let you avoid exploding by peeking at cards before you draw, forcing your opponent to draw multiple cards, or shuffling the deck. The game gets more and more intense with each card you draw because fewer cards left in the deck means a greater chance of drawing the kitten and exploding in a fiery ball of feline hyperbole.”
The hope was to sell 500 copies of the game but the campaign took on a life of its own and 460,000 copies were sold to a total of 219,000 backers. The makers of Cards Against Humanity even put their hands up to help the team meet shipping demands.
Now the boys are cheering all the way to the bank, with US$8.8 million in net sales.
If you missed out on the first round of orders but want in the on the crazy combustible cat action, worry not: pre-order a deck here
