The 25 Most Popular (And Hence Worst) Passwords Of 2013

In a follow up to the most popular (and incidentally the worst, you clowns) passwords of 2012, security firm SplashData have now released the most popular passwords of 2013.

The cyber-security world was rocked when it was revealed that ‘password’ is no longer the most popular password, being dethroned after a huge stint at number one by the up and coming ‘123456’. A battle which was not only hard fought, but also served to remind us that creativity might somewhat be lacking in the realm of internet passwords.

Rounding off the top five was ‘qwerty’, ‘abc123’ and 123456’s older
brother ‘12345678’. Other honorable mentions go to ‘iloveyou’ and
‘trustno1’. One proving that we are getting a little too intimate with
our online profiles. The other a good sentiment when it comes to
cyber-security, but probably not the best practice for it…

The list is collated through popular passwords that are stolen and posted online, with 2013 serving up a few surprises. This includes 10 new entries to the top 25 and the exclusion of both ‘jesus’ and ‘ninja’, which pundits had considered to be password mainstays.

The only animal to make the top 25 was ‘monkey’.
