That ‘Fun Retro iPhone Trick’ Isn’t Fun Or Retro, It’s A Horrible Prank

Remember that nasty Error 53 bit that we told you about last week? Well, there’s another one, and this ones particularly malicious.

So, this ‘fun trick’ tells you that if you enter a particular date (January 1, 1970) into your iPhone, it will reveal a hidden feature that shows you a secret retro ‘Macintosh‘ theme.
Now, we’re only gonna say it once: do not fucking do this. It is a hoax. It does something very bad.
It renders your phone completely unusable. It causes your phone to completely freak out, and you’ll end up with a brick that can’t get past that first Apple logo screen that occurs when you first turn your phone on.
Why does it do this? We have absolutely no idea. Might be another question for the ACCC to ask Apple.

But yeah. Watch this giant idiot do it, just for kicks apparently:
Apparently one ‘fix’ is to let the phone’s battery run flat, but a few people have disputed this, saying it did not work for them.
Apple have confirmed that they know of the bug, and that they’ll be resolving it in the next software bug fix.
