Teenagers Have Created Condoms That Change Colour When An STI Is Detected

Three schoolboys from the UK have won a Teentech award for an invention called ‘S.T.Eye‘: condoms which change colour when an STI is present.

The boys, Daanyaal Ali, Chirag Shah and Muaz Nawaz, explained that the condom would be covered in antibodies, which would then react with proteins in bacteria (antigens) found in STI’s. This reaction will change the colour of the condom.
And, the colour is different for each STI: Green for chlamydia, purple for genital warts, blue for syphilis and yellow for herpes.
Now the idea is still in concept stages, and there are plenty of issues to be figured out. For example; will the threat of having an STI exposed stop people from wearing a condom? Or, is the invention even necessary, if the people about to have sex are already wearing a condom?
Regardless, there’s not many people that can say they were this progressive and innovative at 13-14 years of age, and the boys said to the BBC that they have already been contacted by a contraceptive company for further development.
