Teen Who Planned To Behead A Cop On Anzac Day Sentenced To 10 Years Jail

A Melbourne teenager who planned a terror attack on Anzac Day last year has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by the Supreme Court of Victoria, after pleading guilty to doing an act in preparation, or planning for, a terrorist attack.

Sevdet Ramadan Besim, 19, had discussed with a British teenager via the internet. That teenager is currently serving a five-year jail term for his part in the planning.
Besim’s defence lawyer said that the scheme, which involved the planned beheading of a police officer at the Anzac Day event at Martin Place, was an “immature response” to the death of Besim’s friend Numan Haider, who was shot dead by counter-terrorism officers after he attacked them with a knife in 2014.
Besim also allegedly planned to fill a kangaroos pouch with explosives and set it loose in the city adorned with Islamic State colours, so the actual feasibility of his scheme is unknown.
He’ll be eligible for parole in 7-and-a-half years.
