I Would Give My Life For Waru, Taronga Zoo’s Newest Hairy Nosed Wombat Bebe

It’s a good day, friends. The sun is actually out down here in Melbourne, this morning I found and picked some freshly-bloomed jasmine, and came into the office to find an email from Taronga Zoo about a brand new baby, a Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat. The only thing that would make today better would be if it were Friday.

Sweet angel Waru has been shown to the public for the very first time after being born through the zoo’s breeding program back in February. It’s been a tough slog for the wee angel, after his mum sadly passed away when he was only three-and-a-half months old, leaving the orphaned bebe extremely dependant on Taronga’s staff for 24/7 care.

Look at him! He’s so little and nude, save for a few wiry whiskers on his schnoz. I love him so much and I would do anything for Waru. ANYTHING.

Without a mamas pouch to hang out in, Waru’s been living in beanies while being bottle-fed every couple of hours, meaning that the wombo team looking after him have had to take the tiny lad everywhere they went for the last three months.

Waru’s the fifth Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombat to be born through Taronga’s breeding program, and the zoo’s teams are hoping that they’ll be able to translate these successful births across to Waru’s critically-endangered relatives, the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat, who are believed to be down to a mere 250 animals left in the wild.

Anyway, the most important thing here is that Waru is SO CUTE and it’ll destroying my productivity and attention. I just want to cuddle him up in his little beanie pouch and let out a big ‘AWWWW’ every time he scritches behind his ear with his unfathomably long claws.

I JUST LOVE YOU SO MUCH.

I want to put a little jumper on him. I want to put him on a little lead and let him explore around a park. I would do a muder and also die for Waru, he’s such a Good Boy.

Enjoy your day, the world is a little bit brighter knowing this wee angel is in it.
