Tampon Tax Closer To Being Axed, All Labor State Treasurers On Board

Labor‘s state treasurers are 100% behind axing the tampon tax, The Guardian reports.

Every single one of ’em has apparently pledged to support the removal of the 10% GST on tampons and pads when they meet with Joe Hockey next week, which is a bloody big step (pun totally intended) in getting rid of it for good.

Back in May – after being cornered on Q&A – Hockey committed himself to raising the issue with state treasurers, whose agreement he said he’d need in order to grant the exemption.

Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT are now on board; Victorian treasurer Tim Pallas went one step further and wrote an op-ed titled “There’s no sensible reason to charge the GST on tampons. Nor to raise the rate“, published in The Guardian this morning.

Despite old mate Tones saying that slamming tampons with GST wasn’t something he planned to do, the ‘Stop Taxing My Period‘ movement is gaining some serious traction.

At 2pm today, there’ll be rallies all across Australia [here are the Facebook events for SydneyCanberraHobart, and Perth, but unfortunately, the Melbourne one has been cancelled “due to a very unexpected circumstance”] and, if you haven’t seen this ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ / ‘Drop It Like It’s Rot’ parody yet, then headphones on, pals – you’re in for a treat.
