Members of The Taliban have been using fake Facebook accounts to draw military secrets out of Australian troops by posing as sexy ladies – proof that even trained army officers can be duped Catfish-style by savvy social media users.
A review of social media in the defence force revealed that naive Facebook-using soldiers tended to be susceptible to fake profiles – particularly those of hot chicks – warning troops: “the Taliban have used pictures of attractive women as the front of their Facebook profiles and have befriended soldiers.”
The real danger of befriending strangers in this way is the potential access to locations from Facebook’s geo-tagging capabilities, and lesser potential issues like giving strangers access to photos of the era you had terrible hair.
It’s a sign of the times that even the Taliban – an organisation borne from an aggressive anti-modern ideology – understands the value of sex and social media when it comes to catching out prospective enemies.
