Sydney’s Iconic World Bar Is Calling Last Drinks This Week

In what seems like a sudden, shock move, Sydney‘s World Bar is closing down on November 29 after 18 years of business in the city’s nightlife scene.

The venue posted up a big farewell on Facebook and Instagram this afternoon, thanking all its supporters and punters for the love over the years, and a big nod to some of the huge acts that have cut their teeth at World Bar like Gang Of YouthsAlison WonderlandFlume, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard to name but a few.

World Bar has changed its sign posted out the front of the legendary terrace as a bit of a “see ya later” to everyone that helped keep the venue kicking over the last 18 years.

The outgoing World Bar team recognised that although the controversial lockout laws in the Sydney CBD are slowly but surely taking out live venues and clubs one by one, the best way to win back the city’s nightlife is to make noise about it – and have encouraged those who feel frustrated by the bar’s closure to put the pressure on, for “elected officials to be brave and make positive changes to the legislation“, and for everyone to go and support the clubs and venues that are still existing in the city.

Our parting words to anyone who loves Sydney’s nightlife are these – the best way to rebel is to go out. There are great venues and amazing music alive in the Cross and surrounding areas, so please get out there and support all our incredible friends – promoters, venue owners, artists- still battling away for their love of live music.

The Sydney institution leaves behind a huge legacy, including being the place where a lot of folks went out for their first night on the town, the home of many a drunken pash snapped by a club photographer, as well as being a hub for live music and club nights like Otto’s House PartyMUMThe Wall, and Ricardo’s.

The Wall is having one last rager on Wednesday November 28, where I’m sure the teapots will be flowing freely into the early hours of Thursday morning.
