Sydney Uni Admits To Losing A Computer Containing Sensitive Student Info

In what could potentially amount to a major breach of privacy, the University of Sydney has admitted hat a staff member lost a notebook computer containing sensitive student information.

In an email sent around to students yesterday, the university said that it could not “absolutely guarantee the safety” of the information contained within the laptop, which they say was “lost in transit.”
Amongst other things, the computer contained details of students who access the university’s disability support services program, within its Disability Assist Database.
It is unclear how many students have been potentially affected, however, a copy of the email obtained by Fairfax says that information such as “names, dates of birth, contact details and disability diagnoses” is included in the database.
While the university assured students that the database is protected by a password, the email acknowledged that it could still be “inappropriately and unlawfully accessed.”
The university is investigating the privacy breach internally, and says that it has adopted a “range of additional procedures” to secure student data. NSW police have also been alerted.
