Syd Trains Apologises For Making Socceroos Fans Miss Half Last Night’s Match

Sydney Trains has issued a statement apologising for the huge delays last night, which left hundred of Socceroos fans stranded and furious on the way to the match at Olympic Park.

The delays were caused by “a number of unexpected incidents“, including a tree on the tracks and several instances of attempted self-harm. Because all these incidents happened at the same time, the delays were sudden, unannounced, and massive.

In fact, passengers on their way to the World Cup qualifying match between the Socceroos and Honduras missed the entire first half of the game, with many punters streaming it on their phones while stuck on board.

One match-goer told PEDESTRIAN.TV at 8pm last night that people had been stuck on the platform since 7pm. They eventually got onto a train 50 minutes later. Once they arrived, according to our source, even sprinting to the stadium only got them there 5 minutes before half time.

To Sydney Trains’ credit, they’ve apologised in full for the massive waits, and hopefully the Socceroos fans who missed the first half of the game that saw Australia qualify for the World Cup will come to forgive them.

Here’s their full statement, courtesy a spokesperson from Sydney Trains:

We’d like to apologise to fans who missed the start of the World Cup Qualifier between Australia and Honduras due to delays on the network.

The delays were a result of a number of unexpected incidents including a tree falling onto the tracks between St Leonards and Wollstonecraft, and a fire to sleepers at North Strathfield.

There were also other incidents including multiple self-harm attempts and trespassers at Doonside and Bellambi.

When delays occur on our network, trains are forced to stop and can only move once the delay is resolved. This causes a ripple effect across our entire network, which was the case last night.

We’re reviewing our management of last night to identify where we can improve operations.
