Sydney Tower’s Skywalk Reopens With New Safety Measures After March Death

Sydney Tower’s Skywalk experience has reopened today with new safety measures after a 21-year-old woman unclipped her restraint belt and jumped to her death on March 8.

While the tower’s observation desk was only temporarily closed, the Skywalk has been off-limits since while the tower’s parent company, Merlin Entertainments Group, took time to review safety protocols.

The 45-minute open-air tour is 268-metres above street level. Sydney Tower is the city’s tallest building.

Sydney Tower Eye divisional director Rob Smith confirmed to the Sydney Morning Herald that full-body safety harness suits have replaced the restraint belts. They’ll be worn underneath the walk’s body suit and fitted over the shoulder of each walker by an instructor. This is in addition to previous safety conditions, which included participants signing a declaration form that confirms they won’t tamper or remove any safety equipment.

Smith also stated that today’s Skywalk proceeds would be donated to Lifeline.
