Sydney Siege Victims To Be Remembered With Sea Of Flowers-Inspired Memorial

The NSW State Government today announced plans for a permanent tribute on Martin Place, in memory of those who lost their lives last December in the Lindt Cafe siege.
The memorial is inspired by the sea of flowers that were left at the site in the wake of the deadly siege, that claimed the lives of Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson.
NSW Premier Mike Baird made the announcement today, saying:
“This enduring memorial is intended to pay tribute to the victims and survivors who, by sheer chance, were caught up in that dreadful day. It is appropriate that the memory of this community spirit live on here in Martin Place. We have worked closely with the Dawson and Johnson families to choose a design that we believe captures the spirit of the outpouring of support we witnessed from people all over NSW.”

The design, by Professor Richard Johnson, will feature 400 floral cubes, laid into the granite pavement of Martin Place in a “scattered starburst pattern”. Though plans are underway, there is no set date for the project’s completion.

A candlelit ceremony will be held on Martin Place this coming Tuesday to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.
