Sydney Lawyers Take On Jesse Willesee Pro Bono After Town Hall Weed Arrest

Assuming your recall isn’t too hazy, you might remember that last month, we followed the story of Jesse Willesee, who staged a protest in favour of medical marijuana on the steps of Sydney Town Hall, and got himself arrested in the process:
Today we have received word that Doswon Durco Lawyers – based in Newtown, Sydney – have agreed to take on Willesee’s case entirely for free, as it falls in line with the firm’s progressive ideology.
In a statement this morning, they said:
Dowson Turco Lawyers has chosen to act and appear pro-bono for Jesse Willesee in the Downing Centre on 20 May 2015 because Jesse’s charge for administering a prohibited drug has come about in the context of a conceptual artwork, provoking thinking and discussion about drug law reform in Australia. We recognise Jesse as a significant conceptual artist on that point but will nevertheless independently advise him in relation to the proceedings and appear for him pursuant to his instructions.
Willesee’s dad, veteran TV journalist Terry Willesee, will support him in his court appearance. He says he plans to keep fighting for marijuana reform, and may even take a swing at running for political office. Hope it’s the Greens.
