Face Masks Will Once Again Be Mandatory On Sydney Public Transport From 4PM This Afternoon

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that face masks will be mandatory on all public transport in Sydney over the next five days.

Unlike last time, the mask rule won’t apply to Central Coast, Illawarra or Wollongong – just Sydney proper.

“For the next five days we want everybody to wear masks on public transport to make sure that if the virus is circulating it doesn’t spread on public transport,” Berejiklian said at a press conference.

The rule will come into play from 4pm on Friday afternoon, and it will presumably apply to all buses, trains, ferries and the light rail. It’ll be in place over the weekend thru ’till next Wednesday.

“Please, it is compulsory,” the Premier said.

“That is the only thing compulsory between now and Wednesday night. Please make sure if you are catching public transport you are wearing a mask.”

Berejiklian also recommended that people at indoor venues also wear masks, however this isn’t mandatory just yet.

“If you go to an indoor venue you wear a mask, whether it is a cinema, hospitality or front-line hospitality workers, it is not compulsory but we are recommending that especially if you cannot guarantee social distancing especially in those places around the eastern suburbs,” she said.

This is the third round of restrictions in Sydney this year, and it’s also come off the back of the recent lockdown in Melbourne. So now’s the time to remind yourself to get vaccinated if possible. And if you’re showing any symptoms, go get tested ASAP.

Hopefully, we won’t have to deal with these necessary precautions for much longer.
