‘Struggle Street’ Dominates ‘Q&A’ As Mount Druitt Residents Speak Out

Part one of the controversial SBS documentary series Struggle Street aired last week, in spite of an actual garbage truck blockade at the network demanding that it be pulled, and parts two and three are scheduled to air tomorrow.

On last night’s edition of the talkfest that is Q&A, the series was a major topic of discussion, and a large number of Mount Druitt residents were present in the audience, giving their opinions on the show’s depiction of their community.
One of these residents, high school student Johanna Larkin, questioned the “elitism and disconnected privilege shown by SBS”, and asked when the personal stories of her classmates and fellow residents come under the ownership of the media.
Playwright Nakkiah Lui, a playwright and former Mount Druitt resident, echoed this sentiment, but added that “I think [we] still have to watch the last two hours,” as SBS have promised a redemptive end to the “poverty porn” series.
Clive Palmer was also present, and in full Clive Palmer mode, spruiking a list of his many parliamentary achievements, and even managing to stay #onbrand by working in a struggle street reference.
