St Kilda’s Copped An $18,000 Clean-Up Bill After Huge Xmas Day Shindig

Apparently, Sydney wasn’t the only city holding wild beach parties on Christmas Day.

While the Little Bay festivities resulted in 2 arrests and cops with alleged injuries, St Kilda Beach was flooded with around 5,000 party-goers, and the rubbish carnage they left has resulted in an $18,000 clean-up bill for the City of Port Phillip.

City of Port Phillip Mayor Bernadene Voss is considering a blanket ban on alcohol for the beach, saying she was “incredibly disappointed” by the incident.

“This isn’t something council takes lightly. We don’t want to implement a full ban because it affects our residents primarily, but … we have the safety of residents and the community at large to consider so we’ll be looking at all of these factors,” she said in a statement.

“The police and our local member of parliament Martin Foley have both called for permanent bans for certainly over summer, and what we’ve decided is the next 10 days but we’ll review that shortly.”

There’s already a 10-day ban on alcohol consumption running from today through to Jan 4.

The entire party was unplanned, and resulted not just in excessive waste but also two arrests for public drunkenness, a report of an assault, and a 27 year old man being hit by a tram.

“Port Phillip Council is appalled by the thoughtless behaviour of the thousands of visitors who have trashed the St Kilda foreshore,” Cr Voss said in a statement.  “People are furious that visitors come to enjoy our beautiful place and trash it. That’s what’s so disappointing to people, that you can be so disrespectful to people’s front yards.”
