22 Injured After Spanish Nightclub Dancefloor Collapses Into Basement

Twenty-two people were injured after the floor of a nightclub on the Spanish island of Tenerife collapsed.

Emergency services said a hole about 4-meters wide opened up on the floor at the Butterly Disco Pub at about 2:30am, sending people plunging “about one storey” into the basement.

The wounded, aged between 20 and 60, were taken to hospital with injuries including broken legs, sprained ankles, cuts and bruises. Two people were in a serious condition.

“I was in a club near the Butterly called Papagayo when I took a call from a friend there saying, ‘Please come and help me’,” one Spanish reveller told The Sun.

“Apparently the floor of the nightclub literally broke in half and people plunged into the basement below. There was a lot of people hurt.”

Two Frenchman, a Belgian woman and a Romanian man are among the injured, along with several Spaniards.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
