Details continue to emerge out of Minneapolis, Minnesota in the US, where local police have confirmed a women, reported to be an Australian native in her 40s, was “mistakenly” shot dead by an officer, with the victim’s son-in-law now taking to Facebook to call out the actions of law enforcers.
Information is still scarce on what exactly occured in the late Saturday night (local time) incident, with reports currently stating the woman, who lived in the city with her fiancée, called 911 in response to noises in the alley behind her house but was fatally wounded by one of responding police officers.
The city’s Mayor Betsy Hodges has called the incident “tragic” and demanded a full investigation, but a newly-circulating Facebook live video, purporting to feature the victim’s partner’s son, claims police have acted irresponsibly and are refusing to answer questions.
The man, who names himself as Zach and refers to the slain woman as “mom”, can be seen on the FB Live from the Women’s March Minnesota account saying: “My mom is dead because a police officer shot her for reasons I don’t know, and I demand answers.”
The young man goes on to state, “It’s so much bullshit, America sucks, these cops need to be trained differently”. The woman hosting the video implies that Zach is not getting any answers or assitance from police since the incident, before Zach concludes with, “Fuck the police. Some of you are good, but like, I’m just done. I’m so done. This has to stop.”
The woman’s identity is yet-to-be-released, with the Department of Foreign Affairs working with local authorities to ensure her next-of-kin is informed. However, the SMH is reporting that the woman is originally from Sydney, and has lived in the US for three years.
The incident comes a year after the shooting death, also by Minnesota police, of innocent man Philando Castile, which resulted in an officer being charged for second-degree manslaughter.
We’ll update this story as more news comes to light.
