Someone Listed Manus Island Detention Centre On Airbnb & It’s Grim As Hell

While most of us are sympathetic to the refugees detained offshore by the Government and, quite possibly, even furious about their detention, it’s difficult to really grasp the day-to-day realities of what they’re going through.

To try and make the nightmare that is detention on Manus Island a little more real, someone has put together an Airbnb listing for the centre, which paints an incredibly bleak picture of life on the island:
The centre is listed under “Peter” and sleeps 16+ people, although it is not child-friendly. The accompanying photos show waterlogged tents and detainees behind bars.
The creator of the listing says she made the listing to remind people what goes on there and that is still very much ongoing:
“People might empathise with the refugees if their stay is in the right context. Also, hoping to remind people that there are still 800+ refugees on the island, and that Peter Dutton refuses to close the facility which is now facing international backlash.”
Even if you’ve stayed in some cheap and nasty Airbnb accommodation it’s pretty likely Manus is much, much worse:

Just recently Papua New Guinea‘s Supreme Court ruled that detention Manus Island was illegal but Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has told the press that he has no intentions of moving those detained there to Australia – even if the centre closes, as it looks like it’s going to.
