ScoMo Says You Should Shut Up About Equal Marriage If The Plebiscite Fails

VOTING. That thing were you have to pick one thing or another, and if that thing you pick doesn’t win you legally have to shut the fuck up about it. That’s how it works, right?

Benevolent Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison certainly believes so, particularly when it comes to social issues that are put to a public vote.
Appearing on ABC Radio this morning, ScoMo asserted firmly that he believes, should the Government’s proposed plebiscite on same sex marriage occur and fail, that LGBTQIA people should then simply give up on the push for marriage equality; accepting the result of the vote and dropping the issue altogether.
Morrison, the sage three-legged stoat that he is, was merely confirming that he’d back the result of the plebiscite either way. But as always his choice of words weren’t exactly overflowing with finesse.

“If the plebiscite carries, then the legislation should pass; that’s my view. If the plebiscite does not carry, then I would expect that that is the end of the matter.”

“Regardless of what people say about what should be the right answer here, the plebiscite is a way for us to make this decision as an entire country and I’m happy to respect the decision that the country makes on this.”

The end of the matter. Righto.

This little nugget of wisdom comes on the heels of Peta Credlin‘s assertion that the plebiscite trigger might not even pass the senate in the first place, and that the same-sex marriage argument could drive a further wedge through the Coalition, much like the issue of climate change, should the the senate block the plebiscite and return the issue to a parliamentary vote.

“The government may claim a mandate, but if Labor and the Greens block it in the upper house, what is Plan B?”

You might say if that happens it’ll be game, plebiscite, match for the Coalition.
