‘Saviour Barbie’ Is The New ‘Hipster Barbie’, Mocks Back-Patting Volunteers

Remember ‘Hipster Barbie‘?

If you missed that for the wild ride it was (and don’t worry, you can catch up on it all here), we’ve got another Instagram account to fill the void: Barbie Saviour.
And in a #new + #unique twist from the general sledging of white girls that has run with wild abandon of late, this account hones in on every #blessed white girl who wants to save Africa by posing with orphans, or… something.

The account was started just five weeks ago, and has already racked up over 17k followers. That could be because nothing goes viral quite like Barbie and mockery, but more likely because these hashtags are a fucking riot.

While the evil masterminds behind this account are choosing to remain anonymous, they did tell the HuffPost (via email) that the thing is inspired by their own days of White Saviour shit, which they say they now “regret”.

“We were never as ‘saviouresque’ as Barbie Saviour, but we did things back in our White Saviour days that we regret,” they said.

“It really just started as a joke between us, a way to get some of these things off of our chest. It’s hard to pinpoint the irony at times in real life… the wildly self-centred person veiled as the self-sacrificing saint.”

These guys aren’t trying to take the piss out of all volunteering – or at least, that’s what they say – but rather the self-obsessed Ja’mie Kings of this world who get off on the idea of ‘saving Africa’ but actually do shit all apart from posing with orphan kids and uploading the pics with the hashtag #blessed.

“The attitude that Africa needs to be saved from itself, by Westerners, can be traced back to colonialism and slavery,” they said. “It’s such a simplified way to view an entire continent.”

“We have both struggled with our own realisations and are definitely not claiming innocence here. Barbie Saviour, we hope, is an entertaining jumping off point for some very real discussions, debates, and resolves.”

And yeah yeah yeah okay, they GET that some people might be offended by the account. They know. But they also don’t really give a flying fajita about it.
“If you’re offended by the account then you’d better be offended by the real accounts who actually display this behaviour in all authenticity,” they said. “That is the real offence.”
