Sam Leach Wins Archibald Prize

Australia’s most prestigious portraiture prize, the Archibald, was this year awarded to Melbourne based artist Sam Leach for his painting of musician, actor and comedian Tim Minchin. Astonishingly Leach also won the Wynne Prize (awarded to the best landscape painting or figure sculpture) becoming the third person in the Award’s history to win both the Archibald and the Wynne prizes in the same year. The first being William Dobell in 1948 and the second being Brett Whiteley who did one better and claimed all three prizes, Archibald, Wynne and Sulman in 1978.

Leach receives $50,000 for the Archibald win and $25,00 for the Wynne Prize – his work is currently on view in Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales.
