Salma Hayek Is Incredibly Unimpressed With That Frida Kahlo Barbie Doll

After the release of the ‘Inspiring Women‘ range of Barbie from Mattel, and the backlash to one of the new dolls being made in Frida Kahlo‘s likeness, Salma Hayek – who played the artist in the 2002 biopic, Frida has sided with Kahlo’s family, agreeing that a Barbie doll is not the way to celebrate a woman that fought against conformity and gender norms.

On her Instagram, Hayek posted that Kahlo “never tried to be or look like anyone else” and the fact that her image has been used (allegedly without obtaining the proper rights from Kahlo’s family) is an insult to a woman who defied femininity and gender expectations through her self-presentation, and in extension, her presented self in her art.

Mattel confirms that they for the OK from Frida Kahlo Corporation during the creation of the Barbie, but the release has caused Kahlo’s family to demand that the doll be reimagined and remade better in Kahlo’s likeness.

They could have at least kept her iconic monobrow and intricate Tahuana-style dress that Kahlo famously wore.
