It’s 2016, which means we’re really just starting to acknowledge the inequality foisted upon Australian LGBTI youth. It’s also a year that’s seen the roll-out of expertly-devised materials for redressing that inequality – with the intention of saving actual lives – in schools nation-wide.
However, 2016 is also a year in which that progress has been systematically shat upon by members of the ruling government.
Now, with only a few day’s notice, thousands of protesters have gathered at the steps of Melbourne’s State Library to pit the voice of Australia’s public against a small but influential minority.
After declaring on Saturday Victoria would fund the Safe Schools program on its own if Federal funding was cut, the state’s Education Minister James Merlino said today his department would be willing to pony up the “$200,000-300,000 per year – a small price to pay for a program which saves lives.”
