Rostropovich finished last after he pulled up by jockey Dwayne Dunn on the home straight of the 3200m race.

In a statement, Racing Victoria described the horse as being in stable condition:

Rostropovich was inspected by RV veterinarians on course after finishing the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington Racecourse today and was found to be lame.

After receiving initial veterinary care, the horse was transported to the University of Melbourne Equine Centre for further assessment. . . . [He] will be confined to box rest for the near future and will be closely monitored over the coming days by veterinary staff.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup saw the euthanisation of runner Cliffs of Moher after he sustained a broken shoulder.
