Rosario Dawson Reveals That She Was A Victim Of Sexual Abuse As A Child

Actress Rosario Dawson, a staunch supporter of the Time’s Up movement and the star of Luke Cage and Sin City, has revealed that she was sexually abused as a child, in a wrenching and powerful new interview.

Speaking with the Morado Lens, a feminist podcast, the actress told hosts Cyndi Rodriquez and Nathalie Farfan:

“I was raped and molested as a child, so for me, the world was like that since I was a child. So when I saw it in the workplace, it wasn’t foreign to me. It was like, well, that even happens within family. It happens with people that are supposed to take care of you when you’re a child.”

She went on to say that, in the wake of sexual abuse allegations concerning Harvey Weinstein, she is thankful for the shift in the culture allowing people to be more comfortable when talking about their own experiences:

“Now we’re in a place where it’s finally like, ‘No, we don’t have to keep passing this on.’ This is archaic and terrible and destructive. Let’s look at it. It’s beautiful. I’m so ready for this moment.”

Earlier this month, in a video posted on the day of the Golden Globes, Dawson urged women to wear black in support of the Time’s Up movement.

“Whoever you are, wherever you are – whatever you are doing – WEAR BLACK in solidarity,” she wrote, “because #TIMESUP on the imbalance of power. We all deserve to be safe and seen.”
