The O.C. star Rachel Bilson has finally apologised for her IRL breakup with on-screen boyfriend Adam Brody back in 2006, which caused widespread devastation across the globe.
The year was 2006, we weren’t confined to our own houses, and The O.C. was one of the greatest shows on television. It was the year that Google purchased YouTube, the year that Beyonce dropped her second studio album B’Day, but nothing was quite as important as the fact that Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody broke up.
But if you thought Rachel Bilson was unaware of the heartbreak we all felt, think again because she has finally apologised for it.
Following this week’s edition of InStyle’s ‘Breakups That Broke Us’ column, entitled “Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody’s Breakup Ruined Middle School for Me,” Bilson apologised to writer Isabel Jones and the rest of us.
“When I heard that First Couple of The O.C., Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody, had broken up in real life, I felt true despair. Did I personally know either of them? Nope. Did I know literally anything about their relationship other than that it was now over and it had started at some point in the show’s first season? Negative. And yet the bond I felt to these people (proctored via a small TV screen in my poster-strewn childhood bedroom) was incredibly strong,” Jones writes.
Rachel responded to InStyle’s Instagram post of the article, writing “I’M SORRY!!! He fared really well!”
The couple only lasted three years, but their short-but-sweet love touched us all in a way that few couples have been able to. Much like Chris Pratt and Anna Faris, and Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, this breakup made many of us believe that true love doesn’t really exist.
While their on-screen counterparts Seth and Summer end up happily married (stale spoiler alert), the IRL couple split after three years, sharing custody of their two dogs. It was a truly heartbreaking experience for us all. I mean, look at this photo of them bumping into each other at the airport last year. My heart.
Although the beloved O.C. sweethearts didn’t end up together, they’ve both done pretty well for themselves. Bilson debuted her relationship with SNL comedian Bill Hader at the 2020 Golden Globes, while Adam Brody is happily married to Blair Waldorf herself, Leighton Meester.
But at least we know Rachel Bilson is at least sorry for ruining our youth with this heartbreak that was definitely more devastating than some of my own high school breakups.Image: Getty Images / Chris Polk
