QLD School Cleaner Wins $156K Compensation After Deeply Weird ‘Orgy’ Prank

A Gold Coast cleaner who was bizarrely pranked by two of his co-workers has been awarded $156,000 in compensation after the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal found that he had been subject to sexual harassment and victimisation.
In what appears to be the culmination of a series of practical jokes involving the three colleagues, who worked in maintenance at a Helensvale high school, Shane Green entered the staffroom of the school on the night of 24 September 2014 to find what appeared to be the aftermath of an orgy.
Or like, a cartoon aftermath of an orgy: sheets and pillows thrown around, empty wine and beer bottles, brand new women’s underwear, “used” condoms (they had cream squirted in them), chips (???) and discharged party poppers. You know, orgy stuff.
Green’s lawyer, Bruce Simmonds, said that his client did not immediately think that what he was seeing was the result of a prank – in fact, according to Simmonds, Green continued to think the orgy and its aftermath were 100% real for some time. Simmonds told the press:
He was horrified and subjected to great emotional stress by this trauma especially when they didn’t own up to the joke and left him believing it was real. He was devastated by the incident.
Who could he speak to? Who should he report this to? He bottled it up.”
Simmons said Green’s distress was magnified because his children attended the school. Fair cop – how do you go about dobbing in your kids’ teachers for conducting their raunchy, rowdy recreational activities in their place of work?
After two days, one of Green’s prank-happy coworkers told him the truth of the matter, at which point, according to court documents, he fell to his knees in disgust. He left his position at the school in October 2014, and relied on worker’s compo payments.
Now his two former coworkers and the state of Queensland, which was found to be vicariously liable for the acts, have to pay Green the compensatory sum of $156,051.
A weirdly specific sum for a deeply weird “prank.” Just get a whoopee cushion, guys!
