#PutOutYourOnions: Turnbull’s New Cabinet Sees Abbott Remain On Backbench

The federal election is done and dusted (well, mostly…) and Malcolm Turnbull has finally been given a chance to select his closest crew for the next few years.
It’s the political equivalent of a closing transfer window: the dregs have been offloaded, and now Steve Kerr / Turnbull has to figure out how to fit Kevin Durant / the incumbents into a balanced Golden State Warriors squad / cabinet.
For the most part, the Australian people were kind to the power players within the Liberal‘s inner sanctum. In a televised address, Turnbull expressed his sympathy and gratitude to Wyatt Roy, who was ousted from his seat in Queensland, before detailing the new-look lineup.
First and foremost: Tony Abbott has got nada to do with it. Despite his apparent right-wing factional clout, the bloke has been given SFA to work with. Still riding the pine with the rest of the plebs, then.

Elsewhere, the “World’s Best MinisterGreg Hunt has been plucked from his position as Environment Minister. He’ll go forward as the government’s Industry, Innovation and Science portfolio, the spot previously held by Christopher Pyne.

That’s all well and good, but none other than Josh Frydenberg will be helming environmental responsibilities for the beefed-up Energy and Environment portfolio. The bloke has a dubious take on both – he’s the bloke who said Australia has a moral case to mine coal.

As for Pyne? He’s been fixed the new role of Minister of Defence Industry, which makes sense, considering his South Aussie roots and the state’s involvement to the massive new submarine program.

Elsewhere, the embattled Kelly O’Dwyer – catalyst of the infamous Duncan Storrar Q&A incident, and a weird AF Twitter mess – has had her title changed. Previously the Assistant Treasurer, she’ll now work under the title of Minister of Revenue and Financial Services.

Michael McCormack will pick up her previous role as Minister for Small Business. Minister for Urban Infrastructure goes to Paul Fletcher, while Deputy Nationals Leader Fiona Nash will handle Local Government and Territories going forward.

Matt Canavan has been given quite the upgrade. From his position in the Senate, he’ll work in cabinet as Minister for Resources and Northern Australia. Similarly, Scott Ryan will go on as the overseer of the nebulous-sounding Special Minister of State in the Finance portfolio.
Dan Tehan has a brand new purview, too. He’ll be the very first Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Cyber Security, adding to his responsibilities for the Defence Personnel and Veterans Affairs portfolios.
Notably, the heavy-hitters ScoMo, Bishop, Joyce, Dutton, Cormann, Cash and Payne are staying right where they are.
Now, we just have to wait and see if they can pull it off, or if having Durant and Curry on the court will just be too much the divisions exposed by the tighter-than-desired election will stuff the whole thing up once more.
