A powerful magnitude-7.4 earthquake has hit some 90 kilometres north of Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island, with vibrations felt up to 200km away.

The quake and subsequent aftershocks prompted the nation’s Civil Defence to issue a tsunami warning for residents along the nation’s east coast, and the first wave has already been recorded.
