We’ve all been in a job that’s left us utterly disillusioned with everything; trudging in day-in-day-out with hangdog expressions painted on our faces, bags collecting under our eyes, our only source of fantasy being envisaging the day we walk out of there.
For Ben Affleck, it would appear that that job for him is Batman.
After the staggeringly underwhelming effort that was ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ it seems that Affleck’s enthusiasm for The Dark Knight has evaporated almost entirely.
First, Affleck pulled out of directing the much-talked-about standalone ‘Batman‘ film that would nestle itself into the puddle-deep narrative of the Snyderverse. Now it would seem that Affleck wants out of the character altogether.
Rumours and reports, citing sources that only get as specific as “separate people” who are “connected” to “what’s going on at Warner Bros” so read into this what you will, now hint at Affleck’s growing apathy towards the Batman role; suggesting that he is now seeking ways to get out of the previously signed contract.
Joe Campea, who hosts ‘Collider Movie Talk,’ had this much to say on the issue:
“Over the past four days, I’ve talked to three separate people, who are connected in some way, to what is going on over at Warner Bros…They’re telling me that Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he does want out. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore. I have been told that Affleck is talking with Warner Bros. in an attempt to get out of being Batman.”
This doesn’t mean Affleck definitely will get out of the role; Warner Bros could hold him to his contract, meaning we’d at least see Affleck in the standalone Batman film – which ‘War of the Planet of the Apes‘ director Matt Reeves is strongly rumoured to be taking over.
But if the man’s heart isn’t it in it, it’s hard to see how a ‘Batman‘ film could wind up being any better than ‘vs Superman.’ So you’d think they’d be better off letting him go. If for no other reason than to cure the deadness in his eyes.
