Peter Dutton Doesn’t Want Bradman’s Batting Average In The Citizenship Test

Immigration minister Peter “Fuckface McGee” Dutton has called for Australia to try and crack down on extremists entering the country by toughening the test immigrants need to take to gain citizenship.
The test, introduced in 2007 by the Howard government, initially asked prospective Australians specifics about the structure of our government, our geography, and great moments in our sporting history. It was tweaked in 2009 by K-Rudd, who added in a bunch of questions (well, not personally, but oversaw the process) about Australia’s “civic values” AKA mateship, having a fair go, etc etc.
The test is made up of 20 questions chosen randomly from a larger pool and applicants need to answer 15 correctly before they are granted the metaphorical dangly-cork-hat of Australian citizenship.
Dutto told ‘The Australian‘ he wasn’t so sure that knowing Don Bradman‘s batting average was a sure sign you’d adopted Australian values (which is frankly wildly un-Australian) and that we needed to change our tack:
“Australian values like abiding by Australian laws, working hard if you are able bodied and of working age, and educating your children have been the underpinning of the success of our migration program for a long time.”

“The vast majority of people who want to become an Australian citizen embrace these values, but under the current arrangements people who don’t can still end up with the same valued prize of citizenship.

“My view is people who don’t embrace these tangible values shouldn’t expect automatic citizenship.”

Dutton’s proposed changes will see the quiz changed to more easily identify if immigrants and their families are planning on “integrating” into Australian society by learning English and getting jobs in the community.

Liberal Democrat senator said that Dutton was making steps in the right direction and that, ideally, we would follow in the footsteps of Switzerland, which has a system of sponsors who have to vouch for immigrants.
