Perth Bar Apologises After Backlash To Utterly Rank ‘Frat Party’ Banners

A Perth bar has issued a mea culpa after displaying some bafflingly gross banners to promote its American frat-themed New Year’s bash, saying they “meant no offence or harm” for the messages.

The Brass Monkey Hotel had hung banners along its railing proclaiming “our couch pulls out but we dont (sic) and “you teach her morals, we’ll teach her oral.” Also included: a banner proclaiming the bar wants “freshman sons,” too.

The whole deal was was intended to promote the hotel’s Frat Party event, with the banners mimicing similar ones displayed at (particularly rank) American college campuses.

After a pretty vehement backlash, in which detractors claimed the hotel was normalising the kind of sickening culture of sexual assault present in some US colleges, a statement from the hotel now reads “we have been contacted by concerned people from the WA community” regarding the banners.
“The team meant no offence or harm to anyone by the messages written on these banners and can see how they are inappropriate. These banners have now been taken down and will not be put up again.

“The team at the Brass Monkey Hotel would like to apologize for any one affected by these messages and hope that you have a great New Years.”
While it appears the event is still going ahead, another bar nearby has unfurled a banner of its own to stand against The Brass Monkey’s promotion.
Look, everyone likes getting sozzled like the Yanks do, but hinging an entire event’s premise on a corner of American culture consistently criticised for being degrading – let alone dangerous – may not have been the most ace idea.
