People Won’t Stop Stealing An Actual Old Town Road Sign & Where Do I Take Me Horse Now?

Lil Nas X’s hit track ‘Old Town Road’ has reached ridiculous levels of success since it’s release in  December last year, but not everyone is thrilled about it.

A small town in Massachusetts with their very own Old Town Road are less than impressed because Lil Nas X fans keep pinching the street sign.

The town of Wellesley has replaced the sign at least three times since Old Town Road rose to the top of the charts earlier this year, the Swellesley Report says.

“The behaviour is likely the work of individuals playing pranks, but it costs the town a lot of time and money to locate, repair—and where the signs and posts are damaged—replace, and reinstall the signs,” Wellesley’s communication and project manager Stephanie Hawkinson told press.

Apparently the Wellesley council won’t replace the sign again until the Old Town Road hype dies down. Probably a good idea because stealing street signs will never not be a thing.

“The Highway Department is waiting until the popularity of the song lessens which will hopefully help keep the signs on the posts,” Hawkinson said.

According to the Wellesley Department of Public Works, street signs cost an estimated $900USD to replace when you factor in the labour and installation costs.

However, it’s not just the cost of the sign that has Wellesley residents shaking in their boots, they also are concerned that the missing sign could have potentially lethal consequences if it impairs ambulance workers’ abilities to find the street..

“[It] could mean life or death for someone in need,” they told the Wellesley. “I know it sounds dramatic, but it’s a very real and frightening possibility.”

I mean, I’m pretty sure everyone just uses Google Maps now, so one missing street sign probably isn’t going to be that disastrous for the small town.

But Wellesley isn’t the first town to cop the wrath of country-trap fans, with the sign in Sicamous, British Columbia suffering a similar fate earlier this month.

The song has been remixed with everyone from BTS to Mason Ramsey giving their take on the hit track. As of right now, Old Town Road currently holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 Charts, with a whopping 18 weeks of chart-topping success.

Stop stealing the bloody street sign guys, the residents of this cute town need to know where the fuck Old Town Road is.
