Organiser Of Vivid Event Canned At 9:30PM Said Cops Gave Him “No Choice”

After the reasonably bullshit news that an official Vivid event at the Kings Cross Hotel in Sydney was shut down by cops at the practically morning time of 9:30pm thanks to a pesky noise complaint, the response we’ve been hearing has been pretty strong.

Which is understandable, considering that it’s a bit wild an event de facto sanctioned by the City of Sydney still falls victim to our city’s stupidly anti-fun regulations and enforcement.
Here’s the original post from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater cover band Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of a Tony Hawk Pro Skater Cover Band.
Adam Lewis, entertainment manager at Solotel – who were throwing the Basement Parties in question – told PEDESTRIAN.TV that they did everything they could to prevent the show being shut down.
“This was a tricky one,” he says. “We received a number of unexpected noise complaints and tried to resolve them with our mix, volume, etc, but eventually it became clear that we had no further options but to end the show.”

He says that if they hadn’t shut the event down, it could have had repercussions for their licence to continue operating in the future:
Being a venue that hosts dozens of DJs, parties and bands on other floors, without issue, every week, I had to make the really difficult and unfortunate decision to end the show – playing on was looking really likely to cause some serious issues on the night, and threaten our ability to operate music in the long-term.

It’s a really disappointing scenario for all involved – we’ve refunded all punters and shouted them a round of drinks on the night, and we’re working to reschedule this as a free party in a different location shortly. It’s really important to us that we continue to support music and arts in the space, with the support of our community and neighbours.

So looks like unhappy punters let down by what went down in the Cross will most likely be getting a makeup gig instead. Thanks for the bloody small favours, Sydney.
