One Dead, Two Injured After Stabbing In Bourke Street Incident

One person has died from stab wounds after a man allegedly stabbed three people and attacked police in an incident near Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall, this afternoon.

The two other victims are currently in hospital, Superintendent David Clayton said in a statement.

The police officers involved in the incident are “all okay”.

At around 4:30pm, nearby police responded to a report of a car on fire in Bourke Street.

Police were “confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them. At the same time, passer-by were calling out that members of the public had been stabbed.”

“Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition and under guard in hospital.”

The investigation is ongoing.

“We are keeping an open mind, there is no known link to terrorism at this stage. We will keep an open mind if there is any link. It is very early stages in the investigation.”

Police are calling for any witnesses to contact the Melbourne West Police Station.

Witnesses can also upload any vision, video, or photographs of what they saw to the Victoria Police website.
