One woman is dead and a man is in a critical condition after a French man stabbed them in front of onlookers at a backpackers hostel in Queensland.

The attack occurred in Home Hill, approximately 100km south of Townsville, on Tuesday night. There are currently unconfirmed reports, as relayed by Queensland Police, that the attacker yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the stabbing. He was arrested at the scene.

Queensland Police Superintendent Ray Rohweder told a press conference that police were “still trying to piece together what has happened – we don’t have a motive yet”.

Both the woman and the man are from the United Kingdom, and were aged 21 and 30 respectively. The British consulate has been informed and will contact the victims’ families.
