NYT Pens First Front-Page Editorial In 95 Years, Slams U.S ‘Gun Epidemic’

When the New York Daily News unleashed their scathing front cover in the aftermath of the San Bernardino shootings, it sent shockwaves through the conservative, God-fearing and gun-loving American community.

Rightly so, too: far from the claims of “prayer-shaming” that blew back in the paper’s face, the pollies featured in the paper actually ignore pragmatic advice that would keep their constituents safer from gun violence.

Still, covers designed to shock have been in the Daily News’ wheelhouse for a hot minute. When the New York Times steps up and uses their front page to have a personal go of the issue on gun violence in America, well, that’s quite literally a different story; now, for the first time in almost a century, the iconic paper will run an editorial feature on page one tackling the issue.

It’s not unusual for a media outlet to harbour certain feelings towards an issue that don’t fit within the confines of hard news, but using America’s most respected front page as a launching board is.

Penned by the paper’s editorial team, the succinct piece says “certain kinds of weapons, like the slightly modified combat rifles used in California, and certain kinds of ammunition, must be outlawed for civilian ownership.”

“Politicians abet would-be killers by creating gun markets for them, and voters allow those politicians to keep their jobs.

It is past time to stop talking about halting the spread of firearms, and instead to reduce their number drastically — eliminating some large categories of weapons and ammunition.”

The paper’s publisher Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. said in a statement that “the front page remains an incredibly strong and powerful way to surface issues that demand attention. And, what issue is more important than our nation’s failure to protect its citizens?”

Understandably, the piece’s tough love tone has already raised some debate – but that’s entirely the point.
