NT Police Put Up $250K Reward To Help Solve Horrific Hit-And-Run From 2014

Police in the Northern Territory have gone to the quite extraordinary length of offering a reward running to a quarter of a million dollars for help solving a nearly three-year-old hit & run death in the heart of the territory.
Sometime between 11:50pm on Friday November 28th and 3:00am on Saturday November 29th 2014, 38-year-old Kwementyaye Nelson was struck by a vehicle on the Sturt Highway near the Threeways Roadhouse, which sits about 25km north of Tennant Creek.
Nelson’s body was discovered on the side of the highway, but police assert that medical evidence suggests that was not where he was struck.
In a post to Facebook today, NT Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Murphy stated that it’s likely that Nelson was struck from behind while walking south along the highway, and that he was then dragged some 13 metres to the side of the road before the unknown offender fled. The injuries that Nelson suffered meant he would not have been able to move himself that distance.
In response to the case, NT Police are offering a reward of $250,000 for anyone to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest of whoever is responsible.

“People using the Stuart Highway will notice signs on the side of the road where Kwementyaye Nelson passed away calling for information. Investigations so far suggest that the victim was most likely walking south on the Stuart Highway and that the vehicle that hit him was also traveling south. It is believed he was struck from behind and was lying in the middle of the road for a short time before being moved to the edge of the road.”

“Medical advice is that due to his injuries, he would not have been able to move himself. Someone moved him 13 metres onto the side of the road, without rendering any medical assistance or notifying emergency services. We also believe Kwementyaye Nelson may have survived his injuries had he been given timely medical attention.”

Murphy urged anyone with any information about the case to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, noting that “the smallest piece of information may be just what the police need to make a breakthrough, and help bring closure to Kwementyaye Nelson’s family.

The large reward is the latest phase in the investigation that has been on-going now for well over two-and-a-half years.
Police remain hopeful of finding who is responsible for Nelson’s death.
