Phew: NSW Health Says Not A Single Case Of COVID Has Been Transmitted Outside

NSW Health Sydney lockdown outdoors

In some rare *good* COVID-19 related news, NSW Health has just confirmed that none of the recorded COVID-19 cases in the state were transmitted outdoors.

NSW Health just told Nine journalist Chris O’Keefe that throughout the entire pandemic, there hasn’t been a single confirmed recorded case of COVID transmission outdoors.

For those of you who have been confused about why Gladys was super chill about Sydney people hanging outdoors, this is why.

There’s been a lot of confusion around why Sydney people can hang outside, but not inside – we aren’t allowed to dine indoors or visit people’s homes without a good reason, but outdoor recreation and exercise are allowed and sometimes even encouraged. Well, so long as we stay in groups of less than 10 people anyway.

There was a case recently where a woman was reported to have been infected with COVID while dining outdoors at a cafe in Vaucluse – but NSW Health told O’Keefe that she is thought to have caught the virus while inside the cafe at the cash register.

The fact that COVID-19 doesn’t seem to be transmitting outdoors is a huge relief considering all the commentary this weekend about Sydney-siders flocking to beaches and parks despite restrictions.

While you’re not breaking any rules by hanging outside in the sunshine (as long as you’re alone or in a small group), some people felt that the rules were way too lax for what is supposed to be a lockdown.

To everyone that was furious at people for taking advantage of being allowed to go outside – relax. Science is on our side, and for some groups it’s honestly safer to be outside rather than inside.

At least now we know that it’s not a big deal if people want to go for a walk, get some vitamin D, and break the soul-crushing monotony of being stuck inside alone with our thoughts.
