Literal Maggots Have Infested Broad Swathes Of Sydney’s Northern Beaches

Maggots! On the Northern Beaches! Thought you oughta know.

Residents of Sydney’s Northern Beaches were quite rightly grossed the hell out this week by the discovery of millions of maggots along the shoreline, wriggling and writhing on the region’s otherwise pristine coastline.

Jane Gardner, who visited Newport beach on Sunday, took to Facebook to complain about the “Zillions of maggots washed up on the tide”.

The decidedly yuck situation forced Northern Beaches Council to close Bilgola rock pool, which was inundated with the little fuckers. Council workers reportedly flushed out the pool, only for it to be refilled with more maggot-dense seawater.

Bilgola resident Colin Weir said he was told of a bather who took a dip in the pool, only to emerge with maggots in places maggots have zero right to be.

The council’s environmental manager Ben Taylor told Manly Daily copious amounts of seaweed have provided a fertile breeding ground for flies. Photos of the region taken in the past week attest to the large quantities of kelp on the coastline:

Bilgola rock pool remains closed this afternoon for a round of draining. A council spokesperson said they hoped to have it open tomorrow, subject to water quality.
