Norfolk Island Gets License To Grow & Export Weed; Australia Might Ruin It

Being a self-governing territory, Norfolk Island recently accepted a deal to grow and export weed. As per usual, us party-pooper Aussies could potentially ruin things for people who are far more progressive than us.

The Guardian reported today that the Australian Federal Government has made plans to dissolve Norfolk Island’s government, and will be taking over running the island in June. Chief Minister Lisle Snell was fighting for Norfolk Island to keep its government in Canberra last week, and is now considering approaching the UN about the issue.
It does seem rather a strange coincidence that this decision comes days after Norfolk Island announced the deal to grow dank bud.
AusCann are the company that will be growing and exporting the medicinal weed to Canada, which makes them the first Australian company ever to do so. Founder Troy Langman said the company are planning to ramp up exporting from the first tonne in the next few months, to ten tonnes by 2018.
“Obviously it’s very exciting that we get the opportunity to be the first company in Australia to produce medicinal cannabis,” he said.

“I guess for me one of the important things is that I’m pleased that it will be an opportunity for Norfolk Island.”

Auscann have also said that they hope to be able to export medicinal cannabis to Australia’s mainland really soon – the law will be presented to the Federal Parliament in the coming months, by Greens leader Richard di Natale.
It is yet to come to light whether the dissolution of Norfolk Island’s government will affect the export deal. We will update this story as it happens.
