Last night, ex-Play School host Noni Hazlehurst was inducted into the Logies Hall Of Fame. While that’s cause for celebration on its own, she also looked through the empathy-shaped window and delivered a wide-reaching speech on diversity in Aussie TV.
Notably, she drew attention to the fact that she was only the second woman to be inducted to the Hall Of Fame in its 32-year-long run. In a stirring delivery, she said “the fact that I’m only the second woman to be given this honour is merely a reflection of the prevailing guard”.
Well, here’s some evidence of that prevailing guard in TV: research released today has found woman are still massively underrepresented on panel programs, one of telly’s most lucrative genres.
That difference is further dwarfed in sports panel programming. While some presenters like Rachel Maddern on the AFL Footy Show are making headway, women are generally massively outnumbered.
And then there’s radio breaky and drive programming, which claims just over a quarter of all presenters as women.
Hazlehurst said television’s growing diversity was glacial, but “the great thing about glaciers … if you’re not on them, you go under. I’ve been riding that glacier for 40 years. And I’m staying on top of it.”
