“No. 1” Sells As Rothko’s No. 2 Most Pricey Work


A famous artwork seems like a reasonable item on which to spend $75.1 Million, if you have the means. Earlier this week Mark Rothko‘s famous abstract painting “No.1 (Royal Red and Blue)” (1954) was sold at auction for that much, making it the second highest price ever for the sale of a Rothko piece (the No.1 most expensive is his 1961 piece “Orange, Red, Yellow” which was sold for $86.8 million – duh).

Auction house Sotheby’s had estimated “No.1” would go for up $50 Million, so someone super fucking rich sure proved them wrong! As owning-fine-art-as-dick-swinging-competitions go, at almost 9.5 feet tall and 5.5 feet wide and extraordinarily rich in colour, “No.1” is a veritable Dirk Diggler.
