NICE ONE: Victoria Just Appointed Its First Ever Female Muslim Magistrate

Victoria has made history today, announcing the first appointment of a Muslim woman to a Victorian court.
Attorney-General Martin Pakula announced the appointment of lawyer Urfa Masood to the Magistrates’ Court earlier today and congratulated her on the role:
“Ms Masood has extensive experience in criminal law, child protection and family law, as well as with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, which will prove invaluable in her role as a magistrate.  I congratulate Ms Masood on her appointment and look forward to her continued contribution to the Victorian legal system.”

The Deputy Chief Executive of the VALS, Anne Vickery, says it is important having a magistrate with experience working with the legal issues related to the Aboriginal Community.

Masood has been practicing criminal law since 2003 and, in addition to the VALS, has also worked for the ATO, working cases in the Magistrates’ Court, Family Court, Children’s Court, County Court and Federal Court, which seems like heaps of courts.
It’s an awesome start but it also seems super weird that it’s only happening for the first time in 2016.
