New Study Shows 16% of Aussies Use a VPN, Are Probably Paranoid For Good Reason

A study by Essential Research has told us some facts about ~security on the internet~ that we probably already kinda knew.

The poll of over 1000 people shows how many Australians are taking measures to protect their privacy on the Internet, from simple actions such as clearing their cookies and browser history, to using a VPN.

46% of us have decided against using a website that needed our real name, 74% of us cleared our cookies and browser history, and 36% of us have used a fake name or an untraceable username. The stats show the percentage amount of us by gender, and by 3 different age groups. In most scenarios, the younger the age bracket, the higher the number of people taking privacy precautions.

According to the study, around 16% of Australians are using a VPN. This number makes sense with current events related to piracy, such as the recent landmark decision that meant Dallas Buyers Club LLC will receive the details of many iiNet customers who illegally downloaded the film of the same name. With the threat of fines, legal action and being cut off from Internet services being thrown around, is it any wonder that many Australians are turning to VPN’s?

Jokes have been made for a long time about Australia desperately wanting to pay for TV and movies, but not being allowed to (e.g. this excellent audio from Louis CK). Then we finally get Netflix, and then today it was announced that Joe Hockey is doing his very best to tax us more for it
