One Dead, At Least 22 Injured After Mass Shooting At New Jersey Art Festival

One person is dead and at least 22 others have been injured in a mass shooting at an overnight arts festival in Trenton, New Jersey.

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said two offenders opened fire at the Art All Night festival at around 2:45am on Sunday morning.

Suspected shooter Tahaij Wells, 33, is thought to have been killed by police during the incident.

Onofri said Wells had recently been released from prison, where he served time for homicide-related offences.

Seventeen of the wounded, including a 13-year-old boy, were treated at local hospitals for gunshot wounds.

Three out of four people admitted to hospital in critical conditions, including the teen, had their conditions upgraded to stable.

The fourth, suspected shooting accomplice Amir Armstrong, remains in a critical condition.

Armstrong, 23, was also charged with weapons offences. Authorities haven’t yet had the chance to interview him over the shooting.

Onofri said the shooting appeared to be related to neighbourhood gang violence, and was not being considered a terrorist attack.

The festival, which was slated to run from 3pm Saturday to 3pm Sunday, was billed as a massive exhibition of art, live music, food, and film.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the festival’s organisers said  “our hearts ache and our eyes are blurry but our dedication and resolve to building a better Trenton through community, creativity and inspiration will never fade.”

Local, state, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives authorities are investigating.
